June Smith

June’s connection to pickleball began all the way back in 1996, when she first introduced the sport to her 6th-grade PE students. For years, she taught the basics of the game as part of her physical education classes—but in 2018, she decided to pick up the paddle herself and play regularly at the Mt. Washington Rec Center. What started as a teaching tool quickly became a passion.

Now a PPR-certified instructor since 2023, June brings decades of coaching experience to the court. She spent 30 years teaching elementary and high school physical education and has also coached volleyball, basketball, and softball. For the past three years, she’s been a dedicated pickleball instructor—running two ladder leagues and teaching private lessons alongside fellow instructor Jackie.

June loves working with beginners through intermediate players, introducing them to the fundamentals before advancing to third shot drops, volleys, transitions, and strategy. Her progressive approach ensures that each lesson builds on the last, allowing players to grow their technique and confidence step by step. Students appreciate her calm, structured guidance and her genuine joy in watching them fall in love with the game.

On the competitive side, June’s accomplishments include a long list of podium finishes: Silver at the USA Great Lakes Diamond 3.5 (2023), Louisville 4.0 (2023), Baird Wealth Management Open 4.0 (2023), and WPT 4.0 (2024), plus Gold at the Miami Valley Challenge 3.5. One of her favorite memories came at the 2023 Great Lakes Diamond Regional at Sawyer Point, where she and Jackie braved scorching 100-degree heat and a rain delay to earn Silver.

June is a certified instructor with the Ohio Pickleball Academy at The Pickle Lodge, where she combines decades of teaching expertise with a passion for helping players discover the same love for the game she’s found.
